Are you grounded? What it is, how to do it and why it's awesome

Let’s talk about the adult version of being “grounded” and no, I don’t mean being stuck at home watching netflix...although that’s kind of what it feels like as I write this since we are in the middle of our social distancing due to the current pandemic situation.

Grounding is a term that more and more people speak about but very few talk about what it actually is, how to do it or why?

In a nutshell, because we are energetic beings being grounded simply means that you're present in your body and connected with the earth, you have a greater sense of focus and calm….and this is key when it comes to having a healthy growth mindset.

The practice of grounding myself has been a huge part of my life and it’s something I teach my clients to do. Before making this a habit I could not safely hold space for my clients without taking on their issues as they released through the work we were doing….which let me tell you was not a good experience. While this experience was especially intense because I am a Clairsentient Medium, but feeling the energy of other people can happen to anyone even if you aren’t a Highly sensitive person (HSP) or an empath of some kind.

How do you know if you are ungrounded?

Do you feel like you can’t finish a project or get focused, that you’re questioning things more than usual, having rapid mood swings, maybe communication seems difficult, you have a scarcity mindset kicking in, or maybe you have a strong urge to be outside.

Those are just some of the signs that can indicate you may not be grounded. 

Why being grounded is so helpful  (and awesome)

I know what you’re thinking, is that some woo woo spiritual weird energy thing? What if I told you that being ungrounded makes it harder to create and achieve what you desire.

Imagine yourself as a leaf just blowing around in the wind, it can get thrown around easily and it never knows where it’s going to’re more vulnerable to unknown forces and situations.

When you are “grounded” you are more like a strong tree, rooted in the earth so you can stand tall and grow. If something happens around you, it doesn't influence the way you as much because you have a greater sense of peace in your life.

As part of the human race, you get to choose how you want to feel on a daily basis. When you take the time to become grounded it is literally you taking responsibility for your life and the events and feelings you experience. 

Being grounded can help you:

Reduce stress, and a lack of motivation
Increase your emotional and mental health
Bring clarity to your life path and purpose
Know your own wisdom, thoughts, beliefs, and desires
Grow stronger in all areas of your life
Create a sense of calm, clarity and confidence

Here are some of my favourite ways to get grounded

Grounding meditations
I do a grounding meditation practice every morning, you can get access to one of mine (as well as other meditations) in my free resource library. You can also just do this in quiet, sit comfortably with your feet on the floor and imagine roots growing out of your feet and going deep into the center of the earth. You can say something “I am grounded, safe and secure. I am protected, I am strong and the healing earth energy flows through me”. Or just say what feels right to you, there are no right and wrongs to this.

Go outside
Go for a walk, stand bare feet on the grass, stand with some trees or even lean against one. That’s a big one for me, every morning I get outside with my dog. It helps me connect even more and clear my head...people who see me out in the forest talking to the trees might think I’m crazy but I’m ok with that.

Wearing crystals can give you that extra sense of protection and calm. You can wear jewelry or if you’re one of my ladies...shove them in your bra. Earthy stones like red garnet, agate, apache tears, jade, hematite, jasper, shugnite and pyrite are great grounding stones.

Move your body
Moving your body is another way to get grounded, walk, lift weights, do yoga, do whatever feels right for you. The key is to listen to what your body wants to do, to honour it and to enjoy it.

Do a simple yoga pose
A simple mountain or tree pose work perfectly to tap into that beautiful grounding energy….even better go do it outside.
